Strawberries
Strawberries are a great crop and a wonderful little plant to have in your garden. They’re one of the only fruit crops that can be grown in containers and they do well in tight little spaces so they’re ideal for someone who doesn’t have a lot of room to work with. They also do well for someone who has limited areas that are idea for growing. If you have even a little patch of sun and a pot to put them in you’ll probably be able to get your strawberries to do just fine.
The other thing that’s great about strawberries is that when you grow them from home they taste remarkably better than the hybrid, not yet ripe, picked to early strawberries you can get from the store. Strawberries are intended to be left in the sun for a fair amount of time to ripen because this increases their flavor by quite a bit so don’t get in a rush and pick your strawberries before they’re ready because you’ll definitely regret it.
Strawberries also come in a nice choice of varieties. You can select different types based on flavors, ripening times, how long the plant will last, color of the blossoms and so on - so whatever your needs are, there’s more than likely a strawberry that will fill it. Just be sure to do some research on whatever type of strawberry it is that you’re buying so that you don’t end up getting disappointed by it not turning out to be exactly what you had in mind.
When planting strawberries be sure to pick a container that has excellent drainage and won’t get to hot and dry out your plants. It’s also a good idea to pick one slightly bigger than what you think you’ll need as strawberries reproduce very aggressively and next year you’ll probably have a much bigger crop than you did this year which means you’ll need the extra space to compensate for it. It’s also important to be sure that your strawberry plants stay moist but not overly watered and you can accomplish this by putting a layer of hay in with the soil to keep it well moisturized. It’s also best that the plants are kept in direct sun as this produces the best flavors and crop of berries. You should also hold back on the fertilizer because too much of it will make your berries taste dull and boring.
Overall strawberries are one of the easier and more rewarding crops especially for being a fruit crop and they can produce lots of fruit in a very small amount of space and are very delicious when grown from home. They don’t require much tending and they’ll continue to reproduce for a long time. So get a nice pot, find some strawberries that you prefer and get to planting them. In just a few short months you’ll have a great crop of strawberries that look beautiful, take up very little space, and taste great!
