Herbs

Herbs are a great way for a novice gardener to begin honing their planting and cultivating skills. Herbs are also a great way for children and younger gardeners to begin getting a handle on the methods and techniques of planting and growing a garden. Herbs are relatively simply and don’t require much in the way of maintenance for them to do well. There are tons of different varieties, some of the most common being basil, rosemary, thyme, parsley, cilantro and so forth and they tend to grow quickly and easily. This is especially encouraging for children gardeners because they wont have to wait long to see the results of their efforts and it’s less likely that they’ll do much harm to their plant unless they really neglect it.

Another great thing about herbs is that they can easily be grown in small pots and containers, often just on the windowsill of a kitchen window. This is great because it means they can be placed just about anywhere and still do fairly well and that you can have fresh herbs growing in your kitchen for cooking with whenever you want them. This can be especially helpful for a gardener that doesn’t have much room to plant. By bringing herbs indoors you have quick and easy access to them and you can save space in the garden outside.

Herbs are also wonderful indoors because then you can row them year round without much of a hassle as long as you keep them warm and properly lit. This is a nice way of being able to enjoy your garden all year - even in the dead of winter. A great bonus to this is that if you’re able to grow your herbs in your kitchen you’ll have a lovely smelling kitchen as long as you keep them healthy and doing well. It’s important to watch out for diseases or bugs in your herbs though - especially if they’re indoors as then you’ll have pests inside of your house.

If you pick out a few nice herbs a just a couple little pots for them to grow in you’ll find that it’s both easy and rewarding to grow your herbs in containers or indoors but they also do well outside in a main garden. Herbs are natural pesticides and deterrents to rodents and certain animals and they can also make lovely borders and dividers for your gardens. You can also use herbs in companion plantings, to add some greenery to window boxes or flower pottings and quite a bit more. There are dozens of ways to use herbs in your garden and more often then not once you’ve planted them you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them.

Pick out a few plantings of your favorite fresh herbs and give them a shot the next time you’re setting up your garden - you never know how much you might end up liking them.
