Container Gardening
Container gardening is extremely useful for someone that doesn’t have a backyard or doesn’t have a great deal of space in which to garden but still wants to have a few plants. It’s a very efficient use of space and it can help your home look extremely beautiful as well.
Containers can be used to grow a wide variety of plants, everything from flowers and bushes to herbs, to fruit and vegetables. If you’re creative and you tend to your plants frequently there is little that you can’t accomplish with the right containers and plants to go with them.
Container gardening doesn’t have to be super expensive either. Forget the over priced pots you find at gardening stores. Find some rustic items like old toolboxes, rusted watering cans that aren’t being used anymore, and other such things can make great containers for your plants. You can also use basic terra-cotta pots and just spend a little time decorating them instead of paying for expensive flower pots. You can also recycle older vases, buckets, or antiques you might have laying around into flower pots and with a little bit of style and a keen eye you can make your garden look very nice inside all of it’s unique containers.
Container gardening is also a great way to go because it allows you to bring some of your garden indoors if you choose to. Small window boxes can hold flowers, little pots are great for herbs, or garlic or even a small planting of strawberries if you like. These little pots can be set on a window sill or a fire escape or wherever you have room to have your garden. Another great way to save space is to have hanging baskets of flowers or herbs in order to keep from taking up what little room you might have.
If you have some space for slightly bigger containers (such as on a deck or a balcony) you can do even more in the way of container gardening. Larger pots or buckets can be used to grow all sorts of vegetables, staking or balcony railings can be used to help hold up plants that require trellising like peas, and if you get really creative you can even do mixes of various plants inside on container - herbs do well with a variety of other plants and can even help deter insects and some pests.
One of the nicer things about container gardening is that, to some extent, your garden is portable and can be moved around if need be. If you have a sudden bout of unexpected weather you’ll be able to cope with it a lot better than if you were to have a in-the-ground garden. This is also helpful if you’re starting new seedlings which are fragile or if you discover that a local neighborhood pet likes one of your plants - you can easily move the plant indoors for a while or to a different location if need be.
Container gardening is a great solution for anyone that doesn’t have much land to work with but it can also be a great option for someone who doesn’t want a very high-maintenance garden and is instead looking for more of a low-key approach to their gardening.
